3 Exciting Changes To The Facebook Right Hand Column Ads

On June 24, Facebook announced that when the Facebook homepage is viewed on a desktop or laptop, you’ll be seeing larger images for the Facebook right hand column ads. The belief is that the larger ad images will drive more engagement and value for advertisers, and will be a better experience for the people who visit your Page.

According to Facebook, here are the three improvements they’ve made to Right Hand Column ads:

Our goal is to make right column ads work harder for your business by giving you more value for every ad impression. Why do we think the new format will be more effective for your ads?

  1. It’s bigger. The creative in new design will be 2.5X the size in the old one. This gives you more space to tell your story and capture the attention of your customers.
  2. It’s better. With fewer ads on a given page, each ad gets significantly more attention when compared to the old format. We’ve also seen significantly higher click-through rates with the new design.
  3. It’s simpler. Upload only a single creative for both News Feed and right column. This makes it significantly easier for you to create ads for News Feed and the right column simultaneously.

What Are The Ad Image Dimensions For Right Hand Column Ads?

From an ‘efficiency’ point of view, item 3 above may be the most exciting!  Finally, we won’t have to create multiple ads for newsfeed and right hand column ads.

Advertisers can ‘opt in’ to the new format by uploading images that fit these new specifications (shown on the right).  As a ‘rule of thumb’, 1200×625 works best for ads.
NOTE:  Ads that follow the old specifications will stop being supported after the end of August 2014.
