Leads ads were only introduced a few months ago and unless you’re familiar with the Facebook Power Editor, you may be a little confused on how to set them up.
In today’s article I will walk you through creating a leads ad on Facebook using the Power Editor.
Getting started
Facebook Power Editor can only be accessed using Google Chrome. To login to the Power Editor, click this link on the Chrome browser and login to your Facebook account. At this moment in time you cannot setup lead ads using the Adverts Manager.
Creating your first leads ad
Once you’ve logged into the Power Editor, click the + Create campaign button and in the pop-up form that appears select a new campaign name, choose your buying type and from the ad objective drop-down box, select Lead Generation from the list of options:
If you already have an advert set in place you can use an existing one or create a new one. You will need to create a new advert however, ensure you’ve ticked the check box and named your advert something appropriate:
Click Create when you’ve selected your options.
Creating an advert set
When you get to the advert set page (this is where you select your budget and targeting options), after choosing the Page you would like to setup your leads ad for, Facebook will show you the terms for using lead ads:
Please don’t skip this as if you’re caught breaking the rules, your Facebook Page and account may be suspended.
Once you’ve read the terms and if you’re fine with them, click the Agree button.
You’ll be presented with all the typical options to set your daily budget, schedule your ad and target your audience. As for placement, you can only serve leads ads on mobile devices, but you’ll have the option to select whether you want to serve them to all devices or users on iOS or Android:
As for bidding, you’ll have the option to pay for every lead you acquire or to serve your ads to users most likely to opt-in:
You can set the maximum amount you’re willing to pay per action or you can let Facebook automatically adjust it so your ad is seen as much as possible (this usually ends up costing more, but tends to bring in better results too).
Creating your advert
The final part of creating your leads ads is the advert itself.
You will need to write a short headline, newsfeed link description, select one image and a relevant call-to-action:
Finally, you will need to setup your lead ads form, to do this head to the Lead Form section and click on the Create New Form button:
On the welcome screen, give your lead ads form a name and select the language you wish to target:
On the next page you’ll be asked which user information you would like to collect and whether you would like to ask them any additional user information. You can ask up to 3 preset or custom questions:
On the next page you must enter a link to your privacy policy, this is required and will be shown during opt-in so prospects know what you will be doing with their information.
Facebook also gives you the option to add a legal disclaimer (optional):
On the next page it will ask for your website address and once you’ve entered that, the final screen will show you what the finished leads ad form will look like:
Click create form to finalize your settings. Now all you have to do is click the Upload Changes button in green at the top of the Power Editor for your advert to go live after being reviewed.

Setting up leads ads using the Power Editor is really not that hard. You simply have to follow the onscreen instructions and you can setup one up within 5 minutes. Be sure collect the right data and to have a privacy policy on hand.
At this moment in time you cannot connect lead ads directly to Mailchimp or most other email automation services. However you can download them directly from your Publishing Tools Page:
