The Seasoned Fisherman

Cha-Ching! Welcome to the next shift in online marketing.

Did you see it coming?

We’ve been conditioned to continually “move the free line,” and give away so much of our great content.

And although, we’ll never “fill up” the internet, we’ve certainly gone way beyond any reasonable amount of an individual’s attention span. There is so much free content on the internet that it is nearly impossible to be heard and seen above the noise.

Just a little over a year ago FB crossed the 1mm advertisers mark. Today, there are more than 3 million business advertising on the platform.

So, what do we do as marketers do to compete? We naturally move to focusing on new technology. Most training products focus on that. It’s always easy to get people’s attention with the “shiny new object.”

Yes, technology is important, but too many marketers think that technology is what make them money. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Certainly it’s important to understand how to move levers, bid for ads, do split testing, etc, but what does that do to capture and hold the attention of your desired audience? What does it do for sales?

As technology progresses, the tools get better. Advertising platforms give us ways to increase our reach, and to retarget those audiences with multiple messaging.

Again, just tools and tactics. These are like a fisherman having the best rods, lures, and reels, and knowing how they operate.

But, they are NOT a substitute for experience. A seasoned fisherman understands weather patterns, underwater currents, and vegetation, among other things. More importantly, he understands how this may affect the performance of his equipment. When he reads his depth-finder, he also takes into consideration all of the other outside factors.

So, how do we as marketers learn from the seasoned fisherman?

Simple. We stop putting all of our attention on the technology, and we start hanging out with the seasoned fisherman, who can show us STRATEGY, rather than shiny objects. We lean on their years of experience to teach us the nuances of their craft.

This is the difference between buying the fancy boat and all the fishing equipment to go with it, versus hiring a seasoned guide to HELP you catch the kind of the fish you want.

As you mature as a marketer, you’ll reach a point where you recognize that you’re going to have to STAND OUT, in order to be successful.

When you reach that point, you’ll stop chasing shiny objects, and you’ll look for not only good training, but you’ll look for MENTORSHIP and support, that can help you move your business forward.
