5 Tips For Shooting YouTube Video Ads

Why use YouTube Video Ads?  65% of people are visual learners, and since YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine, using YouTube video ads to answer questions will help you solve the problems facing your prospect.

Solving problems always leads to more money.

This gives small businesses a platform for not only creating simple advertisements for their own channel, but also creating videos to advertise on other people’s videos as well.

Here are some interesting YouTube statistics:

  • YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine and 3rd most visited website in the world (behind Google and Facebook).
  • According to Nielsen, YouTube reaches more US adults aged 18-34 than any cable network
  • Over 4 billion videos are watched every day

Now for what people consider the ‘hard part’… actually shooting the video.  To be honest, it’s not very difficult.  You don’t require top notch, high quality equipment for YouTube Video Ads.  What you really require is action.

Here Are 5 Tips For Shooting YouTube Video Ads

1.  Have A Specific Goal For The Video.  When it comes to shooting a video for your YouTube Ads, having an end goal in mind is extremely important.  What is it that you want the person viewing the video to do?  Visit a website, give you a call, show up at your location, etc…  If you have a direct, specific purpose in mind, then your video will flow nicely and you’ll see better results than if you just ‘wing it’.

2.  It Doesn’t Have To Be Perfect.  The number 1 reason that people fail to take action in shooting YouTube Video Ads is perfection.  Since the video is a representation of themselves and their business, they feel that everything about the video has to be perfect, and unless it’s perfect, they won’t shoot.  This scenario is a disease known as ‘perfect procrastination‘, and the only cure is action.  Here’s a little dose of reality:  Perfection doesn’t exist.  This disease is just an excuse to justify you not taking action.  Ultimately, what’s holding the perfect procrastinator back is fear (fear of looking foolish, fear of rejection, fear of people leaving negative comments…).  Conquer your fear and shoot the video.  Your customer doesn’t expect perfection, rather they simply want the solution to their problem.  If you provide this solution, then you will have a successful video, regardless of whether or not your look perfect or stumble over a few words.

3.  Just Be Yourself.  Another mistake people make when they get in front of a video for a YouTube Ad is that they act like another person.  When most people watch a commercial, they see a spokesperson who is very polished.  Then when they get in front of a camera themselves, they try to imitate that spokesperson’s persona.  Unfortunately, most times this makes the person appear fake, insincere, and disingenuous.  If you want to come across to your target audience as honest and sincere, then just be yourself.  The biggest impact that you can make to a potential customer is to speak to them as though you would one of your friends.

4.  Open With A Hook.  With YouTube Video Ads, you have about 5 seconds to make an impression.  That’s because viewers can skip your ad after 5 seconds in TrueView InStream YouTube Video Ads.  Being successful will take some trial and error, but it’s very important that you understand your target audience and create a video that will get the attention of that specific demographic.  For example, a video targeted towards young females will have a much different tone than one targeted towards older males.

5.  Video Shoot Basics.  Here are 5 simple tips that you can apply to creating YouTube Video Ads:

–  Steady camera.  Don’t forget to take a camera tripod with you when shooting a video!  Though your camera may be light in weight, after a few minutes of shooting, your arms can still get tired, causing the image to shake.

–  Good sound.  You’d be surprised at all the noises your camera will pick up, including the A/C, the buzz from fluorescent lights, and conversations in the other room.  Always test the audio prior to a shoot to confirm that the quality is good.

–  Decent lighting.  Having good lighting doesn’t involve investing in Hollywood quality light fixtures.  But you do want to have lighting in place to eliminate shadows on your face as that can subconsciously make a person appear devious.  For more simple tips on lighting, read here.

–  Keep it short & sweet.  According to Wistia, 85% of people will watch a video if it’s under 30 seconds.  The percentage drops to 70% after 2 minutes.  After the 5 minute mark, 50% of people are likely to drop off.  So, as a rule of thumb, 30 seconds to 2 minutes is the most effective length of time to make a video.

–  Call To Action.  Remember, you always want to have your end goal in mind when creating a video.  Whatever that is, you want to make sure that you tell them at least 15 seconds prior to the video ending.  Starting your call to action this early will give people plenty of time to see it, write it down, or remember it.
