I was in a mastermind with several other small business owners and marketers from different types of industries discussing new marketing trends and opportunities.  There were traditional offline marketers, ad buyers, direct mail specialists, as well as other online marketers at this event.  We were going around the room introducing ourselves, our businesses, and one interesting fact.

During this time, naturally, everyone in the room was trying to think of an interesting fact about themselves that they could share instead of actually listening to others.  So instead of relaying the fact that I make the world’s greatest meatball sandwich, I decided to share an interesting trend about marketing (which is the reason we were all here) and use my time to ask a few follow up questions.

Here’s how it went…

When it was my turn, I did my introduction and, instead of an interesting fact about myself, I gave them an interesting stat about marketing:

I told them that ‘an average of just 2 people out of 100 who visit your website will actually take the desired action of an opt in or a sale’.

Then I asked them this follow up question…

What do you do with those customers who visit your site that don’t opt in or buy?

The room was silent.

I followed up that question with another interesting stat:  Web site visitors who are marketed to again with online ads are 70 percent more likely to convert on your Web site.

And my final question…

So, are any of you marketing to those people who come to your website but don’t opt in or buy?

The room stayed silent.

Finally, someone asked me: ‘How can we advertise to people when we don’t have their email or phone number?

I wasn’t surprised at that question.  This strategy is only known by 1 out of 5 online marketers… which means that 80% of your competition has NO IDEA how this works.
